The University of PhoenixAlthough it has been the punchline for many jokes, the University of Phoenix has quickly grown to become the nation’s second largest university after the State University of New York, with over 400,000 students. There are a few factors that are involved in the rise to fame of the university, not the least of which is a low tuition cost and access to the online courses from any location with an Internet connection. In addition, the number of degree program options will give a student more choice in their future than with typical terrestrial schools.
The University of Phoenix is split into nine separate colleges that address particular areas of study. The majority of these colleges offer undergraduate degrees although there are some graduate degrees available as well. In looking at the online university, it is important for a student to remember that the University of Phoenix is classified as a for-profit operation, which is quite different from nearly every other university in the country. This means that it acts as a business rather than a school, with profit as the main motivating factor. However, the business side of the university is rarely seen and from a student’s perspective, the level of education is largely the same. For choice of degree program options and the sheer number of online classes, there are few schools that can compete with the University of Phoenix.
