The Canadian International Institute ofApplied Negotiation (CIIAN) is connected to the pursuit ofpositive peace associated with the absence of structural violenceas well as the absence of overt hostilities.

CIIAN thus conducts research,provide services, offers programs and forms long termpartnerships with actors at the local level in ways whichcontribute to building positive peace. CIIAN activities includesocial-psychological initiatives common to the field of conflictresolution, such as process- promoting or reconciliationworkshops; and institutional capacity building activities such astraining and assisting in building conflict resolution capacityin a country and designing dispute resolution mechanisms suitedto the society in which they will be used.

The Institute is committed to using andcontributing to state of the art, empirically tested methods ofpeacebuilding and conflict resolution which respect the fact thatsustainable peace depends ultimately on the local actors. TheInstitute is also committed to building relationships withselected organizations as a route to long term change.

Through its staff, associates andInternational Advisory Committee, CIIAN is able to conduct highquality research, complete fact finding missions in situations ofviolence or war, conduct interactive conflict resolutionactivities between factions, mediate disputes, train others inmediation and consensus building techniques, and design disputeresolution systems, such as mechanisms for the settlement of landclaims or claims brought by a class of victims. We practicetheory-informed peacebuilding and conflict resolution work; andwe contribute to knowledge in the field.
