The biggest advantage of an online university is certainly with the scheduling of the online courses. In most cases, a person will not need to be present at a certain time and can schedule their distance learning at a time that is comfortable on an individual basis. Another benefit is that colleges like the University of Phoenix cost much less than a traditional college. Without the expense of rooming, board, and expensive textbooks, the savings are much more than just the cost of tuition.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are some areas where an online university may not be the best choice. The biggest difference is that there is much less open discourse between a professor and students. Instead of being able to ask questions during class, all of the communication is done through Internet methods, which could lead to difficulties in fully understanding the subject material. The other problem with colleges and universities that offer online degrees is the negative perception that they have. A potential employer may not view an online degree with the same credibility of a degree from a four year public institution even though they have the exact same accreditation.
